Licensed And Insured Movers Are Your Best Option

Why are licensed and insured movers your best option?
Great question and it almost seems obvious as to the answer. But the fact remains that licensed and insured moving companies are your best option when moving, and this includes moving labor as well.
If you have been following this blog (and shame on you if you haven’t) then you know that I recently did a article where I laid out my results of an informal survey of moving company scams and those that commit them. I reported that 85% of the 127 companies that I investigated were in fact licensed moving companies. Truly that is alarming, and disspells the myth that only unlicensed moving companies commit moving scams.
While those results are very controversial I still keep my belief that licensed and insured movers are indeed your best moving option. And here is why:
- The have been vetted by both Federal and State Governments
- Their equipment has been inspected to be safe.
- Their personnel tend to be drug free.
- These companies usually have years of experience in the moving business
- They tend to be more professional.
- In general they have a low complaint level with the BBB and DOT.
I have found that the unlicensed moving companies tend to be less professional and that their equipment (meaning their trucks) are usually older and in disrepair. Don’t get me wrong, there are absolutely great moving companies that are not licensed, but as a whole you are looking at less professional companies.
If you find an unlicensed moving company that has a proven record of success and that has a fair price, then by all means use the company; just know that you are a greater risk with this company.
But if all things are equal between and unlicensed and licensed mover then I suggest that you go with the licensed mover.

Moving Companies Without Websites Should Never Be Used

If you have been reading up on this website then you know of my recent study of 127 different reports of moving company scams, and you know that 82% of those that committed moving scams were licensed and insured…Now I’ll shed light on some other interesting moving facts which may help you in determining if the moving company that you are about to use is a scam or not.
Of those 127 moving company scams reported I have found that 75% of those companies did not have a website, and the 25% that did have a website (mostly long distance movers) their websites were general and lacked any real insight to the company.
So if you are going to hire a mover off Craigslist, Backpage.com, Kijiji.com or some of the other classified listing services and they don’t have a website, or the website is very general then I would suggest that you do not hire those moving companies at all. Based on my research they are more likely to scam you than any other moving company out there.
Some of the above movers that had a website (and I use that term loosely) only had a one page profile with services like Google Maps, Yelp, MerchantCircle or the Yellowpages. These are not websites. While better than not having a website at all, any professional moving company worth their weight in salt will have a nice looking website.
Here is some criteria that a website should have for consideration as a professional moving service provider:
- The website should have at least these pages: About Me, Contact Us, Services (with office hours), and Map and directions.
- The website should have pictures of themselves and their trucks and facilities. The more pictures (and video) the better.
- Licensing info if they are licensed and insured.
- Testimonials that are up-to-date.
- Ideally the website should also contain a blog or some other social media content (like twitter or facebook.)
The moving companies that did have a website, the websites were nicely designed and looked professional, however, they were usually one page or two with no real info about the companies or their principles. The websites only contain some sales patter and a contact form. Only one website that I researched had any articles about the moving industry.
So if a moving company does not have a website, or their website is only a couple of pages, I would recommend that you do not use that moving company.

The Frightening Truth About Moving Scams

Okay…I got some very bad news.
What we have all thought about moving scams and those that commit them have been wrong, and I am afraid that the licensed and insured moving companies will not want this information to come to light…But it has to be told.

I written so much about moving company scams and how to spot them and to avoid them. Many of you have written into me asking me to research this company or that one. And in my research I have found a frightening truth about moving scammers.
First let me tell you about the sources that I use when looking at a moving company to see they are good, bad or scammers:
Those four sources are my primary sources I use when I do research about moving companies. Of course I use other sources, but those four will make or break it for me when I recommend a moving company or not.
It is from these sources that I was able to piece together my informal findings about moving scams.
Over the last month I have looked at 127 different moving companies. They range from the small companies to the large long distance moving companies, it also includes moving laborers. And I discovered this startling truth: 82% of all the moving scams committed; they were done by licensed and insured moving companies.
Hard, bitter fact.
I hear all the time how the licensed and insured companies want to destroy the unlicensed and uninsured moving companies because are responsible for all the moving scams, when in fact it is the licensed and insured companies that committing the moving scams.
Sure, the unlicensed moving companies do commit moving scams and are seemingly more likely to, but statistics show that they account for the minority of the moving company scammers.
So remember that when you are looking at this large moving company that claims to licensed and insured, don’t just hire them because they are legitimate; make sure you research them just as hard as you would an unlicensed mover.
Sorry to have to spring this info on you, and I know that the moving companies that are reading this blog will quit, but it is only because they can’t stand the light of truth.
