Moving Company Prices and Costs

One of the most stressful parts of the move is the cost.

Let’s face it: Moving is a stressful and exhuasting process; filled with a lot of opportunities for disaster. But if you don’t know the price of moving then you will have an even more difficult experience.

There are many moving companies out there and they all charge in a different way. The larger van lines usually charge by the weight and distance of the move. While the smaller moving companies will charge by the hour or a flat rate.

The larger van lines for the most part all charge the same. They specialize in the long distance moves. What you need to know about this: is that there are hidden costs that can come up. If the weight is not estimated correctly then your move may end up costing you more (sometimes less.) Also, the van lines will charge extra for odd sized furniture like pianos, or large screen and flat screen TVs, exercise equipment, etc. So know before hand what is charged extra.

The biggest cost saver with the moving is reducing your weight. So give away those old books that are never read (magazines too.) Hold a garage sale and sell off the old furniture. Only take the essentials.

The smaller moving companies usually cater to the local moving public they usually charge hourly fees. These fees range widely depending on the company and service offered.

For the moving labor companies you will get very low fees. These companies usually don’t have a truck so you’ll have to rent one yourself, make sure it has fuel, and even drive it yourself. So you’ll have to figure all that into the hourly fees charged to you by these “moving companies.”

The full service moving companies charge either a flat fee or by the hour. Usually the bigger and the more distance the move the more likely you’ll get a flat rate. If have a 3 bedroom home or bigger and you are quoted an hourly rate ask for a flat rate. Larger homes will take a good portion of the day so that hourly fee will add up quickly.

Smaller homes of less than three bedrooms are predominately charged by the hour. The more men you have, usually the higher the hourly fee is. The cost with more men vs. less men is the time difference. The more men the faster the move and vica versa. While it may cost more per hour with more men the move will be less time. A move with less men will take more time. In the long run it doesn’t come down to money but time.

Of course there are ways to lessen the cost of hourly and I wrote about that in an article called Moving: How To Speed Up and Save Money which can be found else where on this blog. By knowing the costs and prices of moving, and knowing and applying the tips and tricks of my articles you’ll have pleasant move that is stress free and maybe even enjoyable.
