Bad Movers

This is the kind of mover you get when you hire bad movers

This is the kind of mover you get when you hire bad movers

Bad movers seem to be everywhere these days. The news love to report about them and article writers love to write about them. But what is a Bad Mover?

Every movers is going to have their flops. There is always going to be a move that they do that something gets broke, or an employee breaks something, or worse…steals something. Does that make that company a bad mover?

If a moving company moves a hundred people and 97 of those moves the customer was happy, but the other three were not…Is that company a bad mover? I think most of us would agree that they were not.

So what is a bad mover?

Are bad movers all scams? No. But all scammers are bad movers! You need to read my website thoroughly to know how to spot and avoid the moving scammers.

So what is a bad mover?

[youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HfA6ppnSjU]

Here is what I think a bad mover is:

1) They have a high incidence of complaints on them from the BBB and other such groups.

Just because a moving company has a good rating does not make them a good mover. Check out how many complaints they have gotten as compared to other movers. The BBB is easily manipulated and bribed (…ooops slip of the tongue there. I meant they are paid to report good ratings…) I know of one company that has more complaints on them than any other moving company in that BBB yet has an “A-” rating. This company has over 10 complaints in 12 months, yet another moving company only has one complaint and they have a “D-” rating. With the BBB as long as you have money you can have a good BBB report.

2) They will not honor legitimate claims levied against them for breakage, etc.

Bad movers will not honor any claims about breakage, theft or loss. Bad movers will also make it very difficult for you to even file a claim or follow up on it if a claim is filed.

3) Bad movers will often claim they are part of reputable groups like the BBB or a movers’ association when they are not.

I can’t tell you how many times I have seen a moving company claim they are members of one group or another that has a high perceived reputation. The company I mentioned earlier with a large amount of claims against it is guilty of this crime as well. They claim they are members of the BBB yet the BBB says they are not. Bad movers want you to believe that they are good movers even if they have to lie.

All moving company scammers are bad movers, but not all bad movers are moving scams. A bod mover is exactly what the title says they are…Bad Movers.

You see, many bad movers are legitimate moving companies. Some are even licensed and insured and bonded, etc. The company is just badly managed. They hire hooligans and slackers, thieves and welfare scammers, criminals and druggies. They don’t care how the move is carried out or whether you are happy or not. And their crew is an example of that attitude.

Beware of the scammers, but also beware of the bad movers. Bad movers are far more plentiful than the scammers.

Moving and Junk Removal…What?

February 25, 2009 by jburnham
Filed under Moving Tips and Advice

How many times do I have to go on Craigslist and see ads that say, “Moving and Junk Removal” or something along those lines?

Moving and Junk Removal…seriously? In what demented mind are moving someones precious belongings or expensive office equipment the sames as junk removal? Do they use the same truck in moving your stuff as they do with taking out the stinking, rotting trash?

I don’t know about you people, but I know I would never hire a junk man to move my expensive and delicate furniture and heirlooms. Someone that does moving and junk removal is someone that is doing anything they can to make money…and there is nothing wrong with that at all. I applaud them actually, but come on, do you really believe someone is going to take you seriously as a professional mover if you also haul trash and debris in the same truck? The answer is they are not.

No, when you need a mover call a professional mover. When you need garbage taken away call a trash remover.

Now there is nothing saying that these could be seperate divisions within the same company, as they can complement one another, but do not advertise the in the same breath.

Moving and junk removal are not the same and give to different pictures. Do them both if you wish, but keep them different in the eyes of the consumer.

Moving Estimates: Getting it in Writing.

Getting your moving estimates in writing before you do your move is imperative. This is your biggest defense in preventing moving scams.

Moving estimates serve an important role in the stress free moving day blitz. By getting your moving quote in writing before the move allows for you to plan the expenditures and time allowances.

You should never sign a moving estimate agreement until you have fully understood the agreement and have addressed any areas of concern such as possible areas where there may be extra or hidden fees. This is a vital area to be on the look out for as this where many moving scam companies really hit you hard.

I have written a great article called: Moving Estimates: 20 Questions That Guarantee Success. As you can tell by the title there are 20 questions that you should ask minimally. By following the advice in that article and then getting your estimate in writing you should prevent a lot of stress and heartache.

A many of moving scams are founded on the premise of not getting the moving estimate in writing…so do yourself a favor and get your moving estimate in writing before the move: even if it is only by email!

Find Local Moving Companies: 4 Sources to Find Local Moving Help

Where to find local moving companies, especially reputable local moving companies, can be a frustrating and exciting thing to accomplish. While not difficult to find local moving companies, it is hard to find the right one that is honest and will get the job done.

I am going to give you some of the best places to find local moving companies, and a little training on finding the right one for you.

So lets begin:

The first place I would suggest to find local moving companies is the internet. Now many of the moving company gurus out there will say that this is the last place to look. They are wrong. It is the first place to look.

Looking on the internet to find local moving companies is not bad; where you look can be.

Search Engines:

This is the first place I would recommend you looking to find local moving companies. Go to places like Google and type-in this phrase: “Moving companies in (enter your city here)”. This bring up a listing of your local moving companies that have registered themselves with those search engines.

I would recommend that then call a few of the ones that look the best and ask for an estimate. The moving estimate the venue where you interview your prospective moving companies.

On-line Classified Ads:

This is a good place to find local moving companies. However it is suggested that you really do your homework with this route. Places like Craigslist.com, Kijiji.com and Backpage.com often have classified listings of moving companies. However, especially with Craigslist, many moving scam companies thrive with these forums.

I have many articles that you could read that will help you in finding the right company so as to avoid moving scams. My most popular article by far is Craigslist Mover Scams. I highly recommend that you spend some time reading my articles to help you avoid the moving scams.

Phone Books:

Phone books, either on-line or off, are great sources of moving companies. Another good thing about the phone books with their on-line listings is that many of the moving companies are reviewed by former customers.

Also, with the phone books you will get more reputable companies here than you would with on-line classified sites.

Labor Providers:

Moving labor providers are also a great source to find local moving companies. While these guys are many only provide the manual labor for the move versus the full moving service of moving companies they are a great source of cheap moving help. Many full service moving companies will also list their services with these labor providers.

Like the on-line phone books, many of the labor providers allow for customers to rate their providers. This gives you an idea of how a these local moving companies will perform for you.

So there you have it: places where you can find local moving companies.

Quick and Easy Moving is a full service moving company that services Mid-Michigan. No matter if you are moving around the corner or out-of-state Quick and Easy Moving can and will help you, with all your moving needs. No move is too big or too small.

Craigslist Mover Scams

December 15, 2008 by jburnham

What is a Craigslist Mover Scam?

There are three major moving scams out there. One of the most prevalent is the “Craigslist Mover Scam.” So what is the Craigslist mover scam? Simply it is when a “moving company” (I use that term loosely) places a free ad on Craigslist saying that they will move you for a very low-ball price and they are not even a legal company, and ultimately you get scammed by having to pay a larger than expected prices for the move, or your stuff is damaged; or even stolen. And there is not a whole hell’ve a lot you can do about it.

In our day and age the internet is king. Gone are the days when we would go to the Yellowpages, or some other phone book, and look for companies and call around to see the right fit for you. You knew if they were in the Yellowpages then they were a legitimate company. Now everyone goes to the internet. And one of the biggest places people look to for services is Craigslist.

There are many good moving companies that advertise their services on Craigslist. This is not to scare you away from using this service. Indeed, it is only to inform you that Craigslist is a hotbed for rogue movers whose intention is to defraud you.  I have written a great article that informs you about the 10 very important moving company questions to ask. I would suggest you read that article and I also suggest you go to  “Protect Your Move.”

So if you use Craigslist to find a moving company for your move I suggest that you look for these things:

  1. Do they have a website or blog?
  2. Are they in the Yellowpages?
  3. Are they in the BBB?
  4. If they are not an accredited BBB member, do they at least have a profile?
  5. Are they members of any formal clubs like Chamber of Commerce, etc?
  6. Do they have a DOT and MC numbers listed in their ads?
  7. When you call them, do they answer with their company name or just hello (or somehting like that?)
  8. Have you even heard of them before?
  9. Do they have low ball prices?

These are just some of the more important things to look for when searching on Craigslist for a moving company. If maybe one or two of these are omitted that doesn’t necessarily mean that they are scam, but if they are missing a majority or all of them then DO NOT USE THAT COMPANY!

Do they have a website or blog?

There is no excuse for any reputable compnny to not have a website or at least a blog. I know of a company that makes a FREE 5 page website that looks great and is very professional.

Are they in the Yellowpages?

Yes it is expensive to get listed in the Yellowpages physical book…very expensive. But the yellowpages have free listings that can be posted on the internet. The listing are great and can even function like a mini website for the moving company. So there is no excuse to not be listed in the yellowpages.

Are they in the BBB? If they are not an acredited BBB member, do they at least have a profile?

Personally I hate the BBB. All they are is money hungry extortionist. All BBBs are locally owned companies and they are NOT part of the govenment at all. But many people look to them for advice and guidence. Nothing wrong with that. While a moving company may not want to shell out $500 just to be a member, they can at least give a profile to the BBB for free. Just because a moving company is not a member doesn’t mean that a complaint will not be made against the moving company with them. So look to the BBB to see about complaints and, more importantly, how they were handled.

Are they members of formal clubs like the Chamber of Commerce, etc?

Again the smaller companies may not be able to afford some of these groups or even qualify with them for one reason or another. But there are plenty of recognized and formal organizations that a moving company can belong to that will give the moving company creditability. Uhual is one group that I know of that sponsors moving companies. Go to emove.com for your area and check out your proposed moving company if they have a profile. If they do have a profile then they may be rated. Check their rating. If they have three or more stars then they are probably a very good company.

Do they have a DOT or MC numbers in their advertising?

If they don’t it can just be an omission. If that is the case ask for it when you call. If they don’t have those two numbers, then they are frauds and are operating illegally. If you use a company that does not have these two numbers, or numbers like it for your state, then if something goes wrong with the move, there is not a whole lot you can do about it. If you sue, then they’ll just shut down and open up under another alias. Don’t don’t say I didn’t warn you.

If they do have those numbers then check them out. Governmental websites normally have a link you can go to to check this out for yourself. But if you have problems with that, leave a me a little note in the comments and I’ll send you the direct link.

When you call them, do they just answer hello or with a company name?

Uh Duh! How many times have you called a reputable local company  that didn’t answer with their name? Can’t remember. I’ll tell you…Never! However, many Craigslist moving scams will answer their phones with only hello. If a “moving company” answers only with hello, hang up quick! This is a surefire indicator that the mover is a scam, or the very best a fly-by-night company. Of course if you are stupid enough…and you are stupid if you hire these guys…then you get everything that coming to you broken or stolen. Don’t blame the mover; only blame yourself.

Have you heard of the company before?

If you have heard of the company before, then it is likely that they have been in business a while. That doesn’t mean they are a good company. For example, many of the van line moving companies such as Bekins are franchised out.

But, if you have heard of them, there is a favorable chance that they are reputable. So this is a good yardstick to measure by.

Do they have low-ball prices?

Everyone loves a deal. But, in the moving business a deal is NOT a deal. If a moving company is low-balling by more than half of the other guys, then it is a good chance you are going to get screwed in the end. So if you run into a moving company that is low-balling…Run, run fast. Remeber this adage: You get what you pay for.

I love to advertise in Craigslist. But unfortunately so do the “craigslist mover scams”. So when surfing Craigslist, make sure you understand what I have written here and if you see too many red flags then be safe and don’t use that company.
