Moving company rates are determined by a lot of different factors, but mostly the are determined by 3 major factors.
- The type of company you are using
- The distance from one location to the other, and
- The size of your move.
Depending on the type of company that you are using is the biggest factor in determining moving company rates. For instance there are 4 different types of moving companies to use for a move. They are:
- Moving Labor Services.
- Full Service Moving Companies.
- Long distance moving companies
- Transport services.
Moving Labor Services: These types of moving companies provide labor only. They are not licensed and insured like full service or long distance moving companies. They are just for the heavy, manual labor that is needed to load or unload a truck or trailer. They usually charge by the hour with a travel fee and minimum time limit.
Full service moving companies: These guys provide the full gamut of moving services, and depending on whether your move is 40 miles or more they will charge either by the hour or by a flat fee (typically.)
Long Distance movers: These are guys that are normally called upon when moving from state to state. Full service movers can also do this. Long distance movers charge based on a tariff which is usually based on weight of the possessions (sometimes on the volume as well.)
Transport services: These guys are not movers in the traditional sense of the word. They usually charge by the amount of feet that is used on the trailer. They usually have more than one household that they move. You have to provide the labor to load and unload the trailer (or POD.)
So you can see that moving company rates are determined by a set of different factors. Follow these steps in determining the moving company rates that are right for you:
- Set a budget (be flexible as you will soon see.)
- Call up at least 3 to 5 full service or state to state movers.
- Use my list of 20 questions for movers when getting a moving quote.
- Throw out the highest and lowest estimates.
- If possible, adjust your moving budget.
- If not possible, then call at least 3 to 5 moving transport services.
- Call up 3 to 5 moving labor services and get quote for the load or unload if you need those services.
By following the above steps you can determine the moving company rates that will best suite your move as well as let you discover which would be the best mover for you.
